Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently affirmed that the UK is responding to Covid-19 according to experts’ recommendations, when the country recorded more than 2,600 cases of nCoV infection, more than 100 deaths and more than 60 recoveries.

That was made clear this week, when Imperial College London published a startling report, warning that if not contained, Covid-19 could kill 510,000 people in the UK and 2.2

Imperial College London has advised the government on its response to previous epidemics, including SARS, bird flu and swine flu.

The report draws a widely alarming conclusion that the virus will overwhelm hospital systems and that governments will have no choice but to impose harsh lockdown policies.

`The issue is not what they say but who says it,` said Devi Sridhar, director of the global health governance program at the University of Edinburgh.

Imperial College was part of an advisory group that proposed a strategy of not imposing community isolation measures but allowing nCoV to spread, arguing that if Covid-19 was released at its peak, they would achieve `immunity`.

Now, Imperial College no longer supports that strategy, saying it would overwhelm hospitals while leaving many people in a critical condition.

Ferguson frankly said that his team rejected the old strategy and came to a new conclusion after reviewing the latest data from Italy, where the infection spread so quickly that hospitals were overwhelmed, doctors could not treat them.

`According to our estimates and other groups’ estimates, there is really no other choice but to follow China’s example and put in place measures to contain the epidemic,` Ferguson said in an interview on March 16, shortly after

Ferguson’s team wrote that they `have only come to this conclusion in the past few days`, after completing an estimate of the number of patients requiring intensive care, based on the situation in Italy and the UK.

But other experts say that the problem of hospitals being under great pressure has been clear since the outbreak broke out in Wuhan, China in December 2019.

`I can’t help but be angry that it took nearly two months for politicians and even ‘experts’ to understand the danger of nCoV,` Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of the Lancet wrote on Twitter.

He 'awakened' to Covid-19

Forecasting the number of additional intensive care beds needed in the scenario of peak epidemic and imposing containment measures.

Some people believe that governments should also view forecasts of epidemic suppression policies with an equal degree of caution.

And Ferguson himself is also likely infected with nCoV.

The British government confirmed it has abandoned the old strategy and switched to a policy urging people not to go to public places such as pubs, restaurants, theaters or museums.

On March 17, the government’s scientific adviser Patrick Vallance said these new restrictions could last several months.

Prime Minister Johnson has been criticized for his lack of clear policy.

Immediately after Prime Minister Johnson made the call, his father, former politician Stanley Johnson, announced he would continue to visit the pub.
