`He practiced for months,` said Helen Osman, one of the organizers of the Pope’s trip to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Even though the Pope traveled with a personal interpreter, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops still hired a conference translation system with more than a dozen people accompanying him throughout the trip.

When the Pope speaks to the crowd, large screens will run live translations so everyone can read.

The Pope himself will likely speak English at four of his 18 speeches in Washington, New York, Philadelphia, including addresses at the United Nations, the White House and the US Congress.

After delivering a speech entirely in Italian during his inauguration two years ago at the Vatican, Pope Francis is gradually perfecting his English.

At these events, people noticed that his English was influenced by his mother tongue but was still quite clear.
