US President Donald Trump.
President Trump came to power promising major changes in the way America defines its role in the world.
During the election campaign, Mr. Trump did not see promoting democratic values as a way to strengthen America’s economy and national security.
Below are some examples of changes in Trump’s approach to global issues, according to NPR.
Syria
President Trump says he is flexible and not locked in to a particular approach, but on Syria he has been remarkably consistent.
For years Trump has argued that Syria is not America’s war.

Yet in just 48 hours, he changed his stance 180 degrees.
On April 5, just six days after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Mr. Assad’s fate `will be decided by the Syrian people,` Mr. Trump said that the gruesome images were of children killed in the attack.
`My attitude toward Syria and Mr. Assad has changed a lot,` Mr. Trump added, admitting that Syria is now `his responsibility.`
On April 6, he ordered an air strike on the Syrian air base.

China
Mr. Trump repeatedly attacked China during the election campaign, but since he entered the White House, he has acted like his predecessors.
He promised to call China a currency manipulator on his first day in office but that did not happen.
After meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, he praised the two countries’ relationship: `We have made great progress in relations with China.`

Mr. Trump’s actions in Syria also raise questions about his policy toward China and the North Korea issue.
However, a single threatening strike in Syria is not the same as action against unpredictable North Korea.
China and the United States agree that North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs are a serious problem, but have not agreed on how to respond.
Mexico
Trump once promised to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (an agreement between Canada, the US and Mexico, under which the US and Canada can easily transfer technology to Mexico and Mexico can also easily transfer technology to Mexico).
Trump signed an order to build a wall on the border with Mexico
European Union
The President once praised Britain’s departure from the European Union (EU) and predicted that other countries would follow Britain’s lead.
National Security Council
Last week, Steve Bannon, the president’s top strategist, was removed from the National Security Council.
Trump’s removal of Bannon shows that Trump’s new national security adviser, H.R.M. McMaster – a foreign policy expert and one of the few political traditionalists in the new administration – is in control.
`Trump’s actions in Syria appear to be a departure from America’s non-intervention policy,` commented NPR writer Mara Liasson.
